October 31, 2019 MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL DIANNE CARTER
Happy Halloween, WRMS Families!
It's a fun day to be a Wildcat today! There are many characters, creatures, fruits and vegetables walking our halls - during passing periods of course. My favorite part of today was probably the conversations I had with some kids leading up to today as they asked if different costumes were okay. We are so lucky to have kids who are so respectful and willing to compromise to stay within guidelines - and have a great sense of humor.
That is all for this week! I hope you all have a wonderful (and warm) Halloween tonight and don't crash too hard from the sugar low later tonight and tomorrow. Make the most of what should be a gorgeous weekend.
Enjoy!
VETERAN'S DAY Major Salomon Pinzon was born in Texas, but he was raised in Mexico by his grandparents. Major Pinzon completed elementary and middle school in Mexico and later moved to the United States, where he earned his High School diploma. Major Pinzon went to college at the University of Texas-Pan American, where he graduated with a Criminal Justice degree. As a member of the ROTC, Major Pinzon received his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. After college, Major Pinzon worked for the US Army at Fort Carlson, Colorado. While in Active Duty, Major Pinzon attended Spanish mass in a small church in downtown Colorado Springs, where he met his future wife, Lili. After completing his contract with the US Army, Major Pinzon moved back home and worked as the Director of Operations at the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau. When 9/11 happened, Major Pinzon saw the terrorist attacks live on television. Major Pinzon decided to join the Texas Army National Guard and deployed to Afghanistan in 2005 for 18 months. Afterward, Major Pinzon chose to continue his military service and supported the mobilization of 12,000 Texas Soldiers in support of contingency operations across the world. In 2009, Major Pinzon deployed to the capital of Iraq, where he served in the "Green Zone" as part of the US military transition team. Upon return from Iraq, Major Pinzon decided to continue his service and coordinated mobilizations and deployments, upgraded or modernized military equipment, and developed processes and procedures to ensure Soldiers were properly trained and ready. In 2017, Major Pinzon was assigned to the Joint Forces Headquarters-Texas, where he became the Officer in Charge of the Joint Operations Center in Austin, Texas. As the senior officer in the JOC, he oversees the mobilization and deployment of forces to assist civilian authorities across Texas in support of local emergencies such as floods, fires, and other human-made or natural disasters. Major Pinzon graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College and also has a Master's Degree in Emergency and Disaster Management. Major Pinzon was awarded a Bronze Star medal for combat actions in Afghanistan and a Joint Service Commendation Medal for his support to the Department of Defense, the US Embassy in Baghdad, and to the Government of Iraq.
