Happy Thursday, Wildcat Families!

We have had a fun week here in Wildcat Land. Yesterday we were bombarded by next year's WRMS 6th graders in the morning, and last night we met with next year's 6th grade parents. We saw many excited faces! Yesterday also showcased our band, choir and orchestra. It is truly incredible to realize how far they have come since August when they were beginners. I remember walking through a band class at the beginning of the year when they were teaching our kids how to take their instrument out of the case and put it together to play. Now they can play songs that sound good!!! This progress is true for all three programs, and I know that it is because of countless hours of work and practice. And….. There was also a great deal of laughter - which is refreshing! The connections that are created and fostered through these opportunities to excel are priceless.

Now for a few information items:

  • ELA Website! English Department's New Year's Resolution -- In hopes of better informing families of the exciting work students are doing, the WRMS 2019 ELA Resolution is to publish a Monthly "Newsletter." We have made it a WEBSITE (CLICK HERE) so we can share digital content as well as student writing. This is also where you will be able to find our department philosophy on reading and writing. We hope you enjoy our first Edition! We have provided links with permission from some of our 8th grader STORY MAKER contest winners.
  • Dropping off items for your Wildcat - We have received quite a bit of positive feedback about our shelf system in the front for getting things to your kids. I am thankful! We have appreciated having more room in the office rather than the "stuff" being in there. Now… Please realize that these shelves are NOT the appropriate way to get something like Tylenol or Advil to your child. These need to go through our nurse and should not simply be sitting out on the shelves. Please review our medication policy AT THIS LINK if you are curious about details.
  • Congrats to Future Cities!!! West Ridge Middle School Future City Engineering teams did a fantastic job in the Regional Competition at UT-Arlington a couple of weekends ago! Future City Engineering is a project-based learning activity where middle school students first design a virtual city of the future and then write an essay on a annually-changing theme (theme for 2019: "Powering Our Future," about creating resilient power grids in the face of natural disasters). They build a model of their city, and then create a presentation for a panel of engineer judges. This project requires collaboration, research, design, verbal and written communication skill, and creativity!
    • Our team "Ochrona" won First Place (competing against 69 teams from Austin, Houston, Frisco, Dallas, and Fort Worth) and will now head to Washington, DC, from February 16-20, to compete against the top teams from states across the US, plus several international teams!!
    • In addition, ALL FIVE of our WRMS teams came home with Special Awards, which included $1000 for our WRMS Future City program, plus a total of $600 in Amazon gift cards for the teams!
  • Our LLS Fundraising is completely under way!!! I'm sure you have heard from your student and/or his/her WCT teacher. Please do help spread the word as we work together as a community to raise money for an organization that both saves lives and improves the quality of life for so many right here in Austin and across the nation.

I hope you continue to find, recognize, giggle at, and celebrate moments of joy whether large or small. They are everywhere! Get some rest this weekend and stay warm!
