Happy New Year, WRMS Families!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed some quality time with family and friends and some excellent rest.  I always LOVE seeing everyone return from a break - especially as we get to hear stories of what people did and where they went.  We have some travelling Wildcats! We also have plenty that enjoyed downtime here in ATX - makes me a little jealous. My favorite part of this week has been conversations.  I do love listening to kids' and adults' conversations about their break. I also LOVED listening to our kids figure out a few math problems in math class earlier this week. Last but not least, I have enjoyed the conversations I have had with numerous families that are new to WRMS as of this week.  Once again, I have to say that I am thankful for where I am and who I get to spend each day with.

Now for a few info items:

  • Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) - The focus for this 9 weeks is Social Awareness and Empathy.  Please click THIS LINK to check out a more detailed description of what your kids will be learning.

  • Science Fair - If you have a Wildcat that might be interested in participating in the Austin Energy Science Fair, check out the info at THIS LINK.

  • Day of Mental Health Awareness - Our counselors here at WRMS will be reminding our kids and families to talk and check in on each other as a part of a city-wide mental health awareness campaign.  Get the full scoop by clicking THIS LINK.

  • MAP test - Just an FYI…  Your kids will be taking the MAP test next week in their ELA (the reading test) and Math (the math test) classes.  The day is normal as far as every other class goes and the schedule goes. They will simply take an assessment in those classes to see what progress they have made since the beginning of the year.  There is no need to do anything for it...I just wanted to let you know.

I hope you all have had a great week back and a good start to 2019.  I also hope you can all get some rest to recover from a week back in reality.

A Message from EISD and Student Support Services and SEL

On January 22nd, the second annual city-wide "Hi, How Are You?" Day will take place. The mission of this day is to raise awareness around the importance of mental health and to help start conversations with each other. HHAY Project founders Tom Gimbel and Courtney Blanton were inspired by Austin musician and artist Daniel Johnston's mural on Guadalupe that features a frog asking "Hi, how are you?"  "Clearly, mental health is in the press more than ever, but so much more remains to be done," said Blanton. "Statistics show us that depression, anxiety, and suicide are on the rise.  Removing the stigma is the first step towards a productive public dialog about mental health." (

This is a great opportunity for families and students to take a minute to check-in and to listen attentively to each other.  Start the conversation!

We hope everyone had a fantastic Holiday Break and are successfully easing back into the regular school routine. Lots of fun things are coming up!
