MESSAGE FROM INTERIM PRINCIPAL ROBIN LOWE Parents, It is time to think about what your kids are going to be doing this summer. Whether you are home all day with them or they are home alone, thinking through summer activities now can save you some drama down the road. Sit down with your tween and plan out a calendar of activities. It might be swimming or a movie or bowling or laser tag, etc. You can pencil in the planned vacations or summer camps. Also, you might want to consider things to do that are free - things like hiking or volunteering. But I do want to caution you about one thing, don't over plan. Kids need to be bored sometimes. When they are bored, they become creative. They learn how to rely on themselves. They learn that they don't need to be entertained every minute of the day. One, maybe two activities a week is plenty. Give your tween time to ride their bikes in the neighborhood, play outside, or read a book. Consider putting a time limit on electronic devices. Don't allow them to be glued to their iPads or phones all day. I wrote last week about devices you can purchase for your home that limit the internet - that way there is no arguing - it just cuts off for a certain period of time and they are forced to rely on themselves. In middle school, tweens are old enough (for the most part!) to be left at home alone, but if that is the case, some firm guidelines need to be set. For example, who is allowed in the house when you are not at home? Are there daily chore expectations? Are there specific times they should check in with you? And of course, prepare for emergencies, just in case! Remember how scary it was the first time you were left at home alone? Letting your tween experience the independence of staying home alone (starting in small increments) is a great way for them to experience a sense of accomplishment and for you to show trust in your child. Stay strong!! Robin WILDCAT CLUB
