West Ridge Reflections January 25, 2018 West Ridge Middle School MESSAGE FROM INTERIM PRINCIPAL ROBIN LOWE Parents, Thinking about the 18-19 school year yet? Well, we are! We've been in the planning phase since October. Yes, once a school year begins, then we start planning for the next one. As such, we are about ready for our students to choose their electives for next year and I would like to talk with you about guiding your tweenager through that process. Middle school is a time to try new things. I know that you think your child is passionate about one thing (robotics, science, band, etc) and for right now, I am sure that is true. But just like most things in a tweenager's life, what they love today may be passé tomorrow. It is our responsibility as the adults to make sure they get to experience a wide variety of choices so they can start to figure out where their true passions lie. If your child is into a fine art, please encourage them to also take a STEM elective. If your child is into STEM, please encourage them to also take a fine art. It is important for our students to receive well rounded experiences so they can make informed choices. And that doesn't stop at the middle school level. This carries on into high school as well. Also, please know that we work very hard to create a master schedule that will accommodate everyone's top choice. But in a school of over 900 students, that is just not possible. In those cases, I encourage you to tell your child "Bloom where you are planted." While the particular elective might not have been one their top choices, I assure you that it is still worthwhile. The last thing we want to do is to let our child think it doesn't matter because "it is just an elective." (And yes, I have heard that phrase from numerous parents over the years). Please help your child embrace this new unexpected experience because you never know what fire it might light inside of him/her. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!! Robin
