West Ridge Reflections October 27, 2017 West Ridge Middle School Celebration West Ridge. The best day of the year! Friday, October 20th MESSAGE FROM INTERIM PRINCIPAL ROBIN LOWE Parents, Let's have a chat about rescuing your child. First of all, I really shouldn't be using the term "child" because your child is actually a young adolescent. This is the time to allow them to experience the natural consequences of their actions. Grades do not really count in middle school - they don't - believe me. It is not until high school and even then, things are much more relaxed than they used to be. One bad grade (or two or three) is not going to keep them from getting into college. So, why am I bringing this up to you? Because on Monday morning this week, there were over 30 items brought in by parents for us to deliver to their kids. Books, iPads, gym clothes, lunches, instruments - you name it and it was there! Please stop doing this. This action creates a really bad habit for your son or daughter. I promise you the world will not come to an end if they have to charge their lunch or face their music teacher without their instrument or deal with the fact they forgot their iPad or homework. They need to face the natural consequences that go along with learning how to navigate this world. If you rescue them and keep them from learning that now, how will they handle high school or beyond that, college? I know you think you are being there for your child, but the reality is that this action keeps them from learning valuable life skills. When you consistently rescue your child, the message you are sending is that he/she is incapable and weak - that someone else must step in and help them because they are inadequate.
I know how difficult it is to tell your child no and stand by when you could so easily pave the way. But I promise you, letting them have a few hard knocks is what makes us realize we are strong - the scars are what make us realize that we are capable and resilient.
Okay, I will get down from my soap box now. Have a great weekend!! CAREER DAY Hello WRMS families, We have an awesome career exploration experience each year for 8th graders called Career Day. This year career day takes place November 30th. The Counselor's Office is looking for a few parents to assist with Career Day this year and next. Wanda Molinary has done a fabulous job organizing this event for three years now. This is her last year to do this event, as her sweet boys will graduate after this year and move on to the high school. This year, the event is already organized, however, we would like a few parents to come and observe what occurs at Career Day so they may assist with the planning of career day next year. If you are interested in assisting with Career Day, please email Kiran Avasthi at kavasthi@eanesisd.net. EARLY VOTING!
